Genetic testing during pregnancy is most common.
* Screening tests, which are done through an Ultra-sound or a blood test during your first or second trimester. This test can show if the baby is or is not at risk for Down Syndrome. (These tests are not 100 percent accurate, untrue results can occur.)
*Diagnostic Tests, such as Chronic Villus Sampling or Amniocentesis. These tests are normally done after a Screening Test has been done and the results have come back abnormal.
Some babies are diagnosed after birth. Based on the way the baby looks and their physical exams the doctor may see signs of Down Syndrome, in that case they can have the babies blood tested. (It may take 2 to 3 weeks to get results back)
