Almost half of babies with Down Syndrome are born with heart defects, that means that their heart doesn't work as it should because it developed abnormally. Also they may be born with intestinal problems, both heart and intestinal problems can be fixed with surgery.
Kids with Down Syndrome are also at very high risk for infection that can affect their lungs and breathing. When infections do occur they tend to last longer than the average person. Also the risk of Leukemia and other cancer development is higher than normal. Every person with Down Syndrome is different, they may have one, several, or all of these problems.
Children with Down Syndrome tend to grow and develop slower than other children. Usually they begin walking and talking later than other babies. To help with faster development Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy are used to boost their walking and talking skills.
