Prognosis
There are several things that can affect a persons prognosis of Down Syndrome, Such as other medical conditions that can occur because of this developmental disability life expectancy for people with Down Syndrome had increased by a lot. In the year 1929 a person with Down Syndrome was said to live only 9 years. Today a person with Down Syndrome commonly lives 50 plus years. Because of longer life, adults with Down Syndrome are now living full happy lives. They are able to create relationships and marry.
Although their life expectancy has risen they are still at high risk of the development of other medical conditions that can affect every system in their body. Such as:
* Heart diseases
* Thyroid Problems
* Leukemia
* Hearing / Vision problems
* Seizure Disorder
Because of the increase risk of infections and cancers in people with Down Syndrome, regular doctor visits are important. The checkups are to keep track of any health changes, if so they are noted and treated if necessary.
A doctor may be able to discuss the prognosis of Down Syndrome but even the doctors cannot say for sure. Down Syndrome in children and adults can vary from very healthy to need of constant supervision.
